EV Registrations in Northern Ireland

Last December we obtained the figures for the top selling EVs in NI for the first time. Even though those numbers only included up to Q3 of 2020, it was clear that sales were going to show significant growth.

The full year tables have now been released by the Department for Transport and the news is even better than expected.

The total plugin sales for Northern Ireland in 2020 was 1,680 vehicles – smashing the 2019 total of 579 units. That represents a 290% increase year on year. An almost tripling of the previous years figures – during a pandemic.

To put it another way, there were almost as many new EVs registered in Northern Ireland in 2020 as in the 7 year period from 2011 to 2017.

There are visibly many more EVs on the road now and we can’t wait to see what the 2021 figures will bring. While we still face many challenges around public charging here, be in no doubt, the electrification of transport is accelerating.
