UK Ultra Low Emission Vehicles statistics

At NIEVO have been playing around with some statistics from the Department of Transport and with the help of the Bar Chart Race capabilities of the Flourish platform, pulled together the following. Remember to click the REPLAY button on each chart to start the animation from the beginning.

Alternative Fuel Vehicles UK 1994-2018

• Gas as a very dominant alternative fuel in late 90’s until a downturn in 2010
• The rise of Hybrid Electric (Hybrid or Mild Hybrid or Fossil Fuel powered Hybrid), particularly accelerating from 2004 onwards until it takes the lead around 2009
• Then see the Steady rise of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) in 2012 really starting to gain momentum
• But coming up on the outside are the Plug in Electric Hybrids (PHEV) and in 2015 they really grow and start to erode the lead of the mild Hybrids
• By the end of 2018 the leaderboard is

1. 1. Hybrids lead with 404k vehicles
   2. PHEV in second with 113k on the road
   3. BEV in third with 54k
   4. Gas with 27k in third, but is receding fast from its peak of 50k
   5. Range Extended vehicles (REX) in fifth just under 10k
   6. Other 295 (unknown whats in the category)
   7. Fuel cell close out the race not having much penetration with only 98 vehicles.

Ultra Low Emission Vehicles Across UK

So after seening the Alternative fuel figures, we wanted to see the split across the UK for Ultra Low emission vehicles (ULEV)

ULEV is defined by Department of Transport as the following

All models identified as being battery electric, plug-in hybrid electric, or range-extended electric. Most but not all of these will be models eligible for the Department for Transport Plug In Car or Van Grants

So what does this tell us, not surprisingly England is way out in the lead, followed by Scotland far behind, then Wales and coming in last is Northern Ireland.

But this doesn’t tell the entire story as it is just the count of vehicles and obviously the population needs to be factored in, but interesting none the less to see the total vehicles grow from 2011 until end of 2018

So we took the population figures from the Office of National Statistics for mid 2017 (latest published) and used these figures to show Electric Vehicles per 100k population, this should normalise the penetration of Electric vehicles across the UK and be more representative.

What we see here is interesting

1. England finishes top with 299 vehicles per 100k population
2. Scotland is second on 200 per 100k population, but appears to be closing fast in latest quarters
3. Northern Ireland pips Wales into third on 131
4. Wales just in last place on 121, but swaps places with Northern Ireland over various quarters

Finally we decided to look at the breakdown of Electric Vehicles across Northern Ireland. Because of the split of data in the Department of Transport figures it would be hard to factor in population for each area, so the chart is purely volume of cars registered per quarter.

The numbers are quite tight apart from Belfast and Antrim/Newtownabbey, indeed Antrim/Newtownabbey appeared to be catching Belfast up to 2015, but then Belfast pulled away again. The rest of the areas are very close and change postion quite a number of times before the end of 2018.
