After Mondays discussion in the Assembly revealed that ESB have been awarded £3.2M from the Levelling Up Fund, this morning the company has posted a press release confirming the following details…
£3.27M funding will allow for a complete overhaul and modernisation of Northern Ireland’s entire EV charging network including the expansion of the rapid charging network and the deployment of high-power charging hubs
will replace all existing fast (22kW) and rapid (50kW) EV chargers across Northern Ireland. The legacy infrastructure will be replaced with the fastest, most reliable and advanced technology available.
This project will double the existing number of rapid chargers and will also see the introduction of high power (200kW) charging for the first time in Northern Ireland through the delivery of five high power charging (200kW) hubs in strategic locations.
Brighter Future Ahead
Today’s announcement means there are now three sizeable projects for EV Infrastructure in Northern Ireland.
- ESB replacing entire network & Doubling their Rapids
- EasyGo’s “50-70” Rapid Chargers
- FASTER Project – Up to 24 Rapid Chargers
Northern Ireland’s ESB network has had just 17 Rapid chargers for many years now and these projects will increase that figure to somewhere in the region of 120. That’s an incredible 500% increase and massive news for Northern Ireland.

ESB welcomes Levelling Up Fund support to transform EV charging network in Northern Ireland

ESB is delighted to announce it has been awarded £3.27 million from the Levelling Up Fund (LUH) to expand and enhance the EV charging network which will transform the public charging experience for current and future EV drivers in Northern Ireland.
ESB operates the largest EV charging network on the island of Ireland consisting of more than 1,350 charging points. The Levelling Up Fund investment, further supported by ESB’s own capital investment, will replace all existing fast (22kW) and rapid (50kW) EV chargers across Northern Ireland. The legacy infrastructure will be replaced with the fastest, most reliable and advanced technology available.
This project will double the existing number of rapid chargers and will also see the introduction of high power (200kW) charging for the first time in Northern Ireland through the delivery of five high power charging (200kW) hubs in strategic locations. These high-power charging hubs can charge multiple vehicles simultaneously and can provide an EV with 100km of range in as little as six minutes.
Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon said, “This is very welcome news and will provide confidence to existing and new drivers of electric vehicles here through the enhancement of our charging infrastructure. A modern and efficient EV charging infrastructure is essential at this time as we address the climate emergency and make the transition to cleaner and greener modes of transport.”
The Levelling Up Fund is a £4.8 billion British Government fund to support infrastructure project such as town centre and high street regeneration, local transport projects and cultural and heritage assets to improve everyday life across the UK.
Marguerite Sayers, Executive Director Customer Solutions, ESB, welcomes the funding as the most significant investment in e-mobility in Northern Ireland since the first EV chargers were installed more than 10 years ago.
